I have a crush on Hans Christian Andersen. More than that, I have a love of Fairy Tales. In my graduate program, I completed a thesis on the relationship between Hans Christian Andersen and a man named Edvard Collin. HCA’s unrequited love for Edvard Collin was the impetus for the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid”. I wanted to build off the story, reimagine history. Edvard Collin’s son, Jonas, factors into the story here. It’s mixing and matching and playing fast and loose with history. And when I started writing about Ylsa, I wanted to know her story, her Gunpowder black tea, and her love of all things North that were not her mother. So the story was written.
