Elise Forier Edie’s story “Heard” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 5 February 2016.
“Heard” began as an experiment in trying to write shorter fiction. I tend to write long pieces, and it’s really a challenge for me to keep things in the 3,500-word range. For “Heard,” I set the super tight goal of about 1,000 words, and it was very tough going, for quite some time. I kept wanting to delve deeply into character motivation, and linger on environmental details, and all that “writerly” stuff. Needless to say, I failed my word count again and again. At some point though, I gave up trying to tell the story in a traditional way, and landed on the idea of telling it thought social media transmissions. Only then did I find my way through. I still went over my original word count goal, so I have yet to write a piece of true flash fiction. But I learned some nice lessons about how less is more, and I look forward to rising to the challenge again.
