Mari Ness’s story “Cat Play” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 8 January 2016.
I don’t really remember much about the actual writing of this story, but I suspect that I wrote it in part because although one of the cats that I live with seems convinced that I too am a cat, just a rather overlarge and clumsy one. (The other cat is well aware that I am a deeply inferior creature who can in no way claim to any of the glory and beauty that she can.) And because I once had a dog who could not quite grasp the difference between “people” and “dog,” but seemed pretty sure he was people – which made some sense, given how terrified he was of dogs.
What if my cat and dog were right – that is, I am, on some level, part cat, and the dog was, on some level, part people?
That was part of it. The other part was that if my Excel spreadsheet is correct, I wrote the story during a period when I was sick, and bored, and considering choices, and possibilities, all of which I can now see bled through the story. Along with those thoughts about cats and dogs.
