I’ve always enjoyed writing about the woods, and one day I wondered if I could write a story that readers might classify as treepunk. It would look a bit like cyberpunk, I figured, but with technology that draws its power from the natural world. To make the concept more interesting, I decided to include two societies: one that uses this nature tech, and one that relies on more familiar resources. I also thought it would be fun—and unusual—to make the “natural” society the more technologically advanced of the pair. This basic dichotomy eventually evolved into Havenstok and Clarity Falls, and I was off and running.
