Charlotte H. Lee’s story “HOPper” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 21 July 2017.
I’d been wanting to write something about an AI for a while and I was tired of the unending cautionary tales about AI. I wanted to go with a positive, happy character with positive and optimistic themes. One night I read one of the Grimm fairytales and came across one of the stories about Brownies. Going adversarial felt too predictable so I put it on the backburner until cruising the internet one day on the types of fairies in literature. When I stumbled across Gaulish Brownies, I found something that really spoke to me. My favourite stories bend genres to combine science fiction and fantasy, and I’d been stewing about how popular culture seems to limit their focus to sexual, A.K.A. romantic, love. HOPper’s sentience journey is about how parental love is stronger and more accepting than any other form of love.
