I wrote “The Lightkeeper’s Wife” for a workshop I took under Blake Kimzey in Dallas. I had nothing to turn in for our second assigned story, so I was brainstorming an idea. I’ve always been a mythology nerd, and I knew I wanted to write about some kind of mythological creature. I was flipping through a book on famous Scotland myths and found a story mentioning selkies. The female selkies of Scottish lore are described as very demure and submissive, and that just wasn’t going to fly for me. I wondered why these women weren’t immediately murdering the men who kidnapped them. So, that was my first “what if” moment, which inspired my first line, and the bones of the story fell into place after that.
