Prior to being a musician, I was a Bastler. The story was autobiographical.
Seriously though, one of the things I love about short stories is that they allow you to explore things that may not have received the same attention you believe they deserved. Magical consequences are a big one. I loved the idea of magic that has consequences on the other side of the world and how that would look. I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while and could never figure out a way to make it work until I started to plan my move to the US. Doing so reminded me that I enjoy moving and a lot of people don’t. As such this story focuses on people with different views on how happy they are with staying in one place.
