Evan Marcroft’s story “Devilish Calliope and the Ungrooviest Apocalypse” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 14 August 2020.
I’ve always been a fan of the ongoing fantasy/sci fi series. Your Dresden Files in particular, and anything by Simon R. Green. I would devour every new installment as soon as it came out and wait impatiently for the next one. As I developed into a writer myself, however, and grew a more critical eye, I noticed that as book heaped upon book, as characters changed sides, died, and resurrected, as plot-lines grew ever more entangled, that I never seemed to reach the ends of these sagas, and see how everything ultimately shook out. I found myself wondering how these eternally cocksure and self-deprecating characters would react if they could step outside their stories and see just how much further they had to go before they could rest at last. This story was born from that pity. It’s the message I could send to my favorite protagonists, if I could. Things might never be finally alright, but that’s no reason to give up.
