M. Douglas White’s story “Good Boy” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 2 October 2020.
I was first inspired to write “Good Boy” thanks to my dog, Luna. She was sitting on the couch with my wife and me as we all enjoyed a television program about a fictional robot uprising. Luna is quiet by nature. But that evening, she softly growled and grunted at the screen during a few scenes, usually when a human character was in peril. I thought to myself, “I wonder what’s going through her mind while she watches all of this unfold?” I then started to think about all of the science fiction stories, films, and television programs I’ve enjoyed that feature androids and artificial intelligence. To my recollection, they typically—but not always—focus on the perspective of humans or a humanoid robot. I thought it would be fun to play around in a similar world from my dog’s point of view, and that’s how this story first developed. I’ve been fortunate to have had a few nonfiction articles appear in print and online thanks to my career in various fields. But “Good Boy” is my very first published work of fiction, and I’m very proud to have it appear in Metaphorosis.
