Mariah Montoya’s story “The Nocturnals I” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 28 May 2021.
I first thought of the idea of an “Eternal Night” and the creatures who might live in it during a hike through the woods with my mom and sisters. We had done that thing you should never do, where you look at the next hill or bend and go, “Let’s just see what’s on the other side of that___, and then we’ll turn around,” a bunch of times, until you’ve gone further than you should have. It was only when shadows started checkering the barely-existent trail that we finally did turn around. On the way back, I thought, what if we can’t find camp before dark? And then: what if the dark lasts forever?
I overthink things, as you may have guessed. We made it back to our tents before sunset, and no one at the camp had even missed us.
