The world of fiction is full of gatekeepers, from editors of major publications to social media trolls who take it upon themselves to police who counts as a “real” fan of their genre. This can be demoralizing not only to writers, but to readers. This story came from taking that problem to an extreme, and thinking about the ways people can respond to it.
