Ivy Grimes’s story “Ennui Tea” was published in Metaphorosis on Friday, 1 October 2021. Metaphorosis

I must have been feeling ennui while drinking tea, because “ennui tea” came to my mind first, and the story of a young woman learning magic at a goth coffee shop followed. I imagined how great it would be to have a goth coffee shop nearby and to live in a town where everyone mopes and reads poetry all day. Yet I could see my character Estella’s point that enlightenment/growth requires stronger stuff than mere disillusionment with materialism and mundanity. Growth requires confronting who you are, strengths and weaknesses alike. Acknowledging our strengths can be as mortifying as owning our weaknesses. My pessimistic protagonist Eris has to accept that sometimes she can be a shallow jerk, but she can also do magic. Her powers might not be enough to make her crush fall in love with her, but they might have more important uses.
