I had been writing a story about a poor kid obsessed with freediving for pearls. There was an ex boyfriend and a sea god and angst. It wasn’t working out.

A few summers ago, my friend and I were driving around the fairgrounds. We stopped to watch the sunset, and she told me she was scared of space. I didn’t really get it. Like, why? It’s just kind of there.

I was trying to figure out what I could salvage from the freediving story. There was a scene where the dude is watching his cousins running around the beach, so I started with that. Then I think I got annoyed? I don’t know, but for some reason I remembered my friend’s fear and I was like screw it, start with that. Make it epistolary. Who is this person, why is she here, where is she going? How has no one caught me writing at work? These questions demanded answers.
