Comments
- We see more male submitters than female. That’s surprising, and I hope to see that balance out more over time.
- I accept slightly more fantasy than SF. That doesn’t mean I like it better, though!
- Submissions come from at least 19 countries, but mostly US, UK, Canada, Australia.
- Submissions come from at least 42 states, with Canada and Pennsylvania at the top.
Tidbits:
- The average story length is 3,720 words.
- I read 826,000 words of submissions in October.
- After a first read, I put about 11% in a ‘maybe’ category to read again.
- About 20% of submitters use Submission Grinder to track statistics.
About 25% use Duotrope. - Wednesday is a clear low day for submissions; Saturday is a slight high day.
- I’d guess about a quarter of the stories could be considered ‘vegan’. They’re not substantially more likely to be selected. Stories that are centrally non-vegan (e.g., they’re primarily about hunting or fishing) are less likely to be accepted.
