A Witch’s Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools – Hannah Hulbert

I kick my way through the decomposing leaves and they cling to my skirts. Others flit around me on the dying breath of summer, adding to the carpet that already comes up to my ankle. The only sound is the titter of thrushes and the distant drone of cattle. The track lies far behind me. I remind myself that I like being alone. That the forest is my ally. But I shiver anyway and quicken …

A question for Hannah Hulbert

Q: If you could have any super power, what would it be?

A: One ability I always fancied was the Fool’s skill-tipped fingers from Robin Hobb’s ‘Realm of the Elderlings’. The ability to know something intimately and completely by touching it. To know its past and future, its properties and potential. And the fact that such an ability can be turned off by simply wearing a glove. A low-key power with few responsibilities attached and hardly any chance of me becoming the target of a maniacal villain.

About Hannah Hulbert

Hannah Hulbert lives in urban Dorset, UK. She is on a permanent sabbatical from reality as she raises two children and devotes her scarce free time to visiting imaginary worlds, some of her own creation. She has a degree in Ancient and Medieval History and an obsession with man-made places in the process of being reclaimed by nature. She is probably tweeting or doodling at this very moment.
