A question for Sara Kate Ellis

Q: What do you think makes for a good story?

A: Oh, that’s tough, but with speculative fiction, I guess I would say stories that show me the future while forcing me to take a harder look at the present. My favorites often alert me to some mad, screaming deficiency in my perception. Ted Chiang’s The Great Silence is a good example, a gut-wrenching twist on that old Now Voyager line, “don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” Or in this case, “we [still] have” these rapidly dwindling species we’re paying zero attention to while we search for alien life.
